PLS Scientific is now able to offer the COVID-19 pathogen test.

PLS policy will be as follows:

Any residents presenting with any upper respiratory symptoms should be tested immediately for URI Plus testing to identify what respiratory illness the resident may have.

Follow the guidelines below to get their URI Plus testing completed:

  • Swab patient and fill out requisition form (check URI PLUS and reason for swab).

  • Place specimen in proper tube and label with patient name and DOB.

  • Place specimen in bio-hazard bag (include patients face sheet in bag).

  • Place all specimens for the day in a UPS overnight shipping bag and stick shipping label on bag.

Any resident that comes back with a negative test result from PCR testing and has any of he following should be tested for COVID-19:

  • Fever, cough, shortness of breath

  • High-risk (older adults) and people with severe underlying chronic medical conditions

  • If resident was in close contact with someone wo tested positive for COVID-19.

In this case swab the resident again and follow all steps from original swab (also check the COVID-19 box).

Remember to place each swab in the proper tube, label the tube with patient name and DOB and place specimen tube along with requisition form and patient face sheet in separate bio-hazard bags and ship to the lab.

The results for all URI pathogens will be received within 24 hours of receipt to the lab.  The results for the COVID-19 pathogen will be received within 48-72 hours of receipt to the lab.

In the event that the resident is showing signs and symptoms upfront and has been in contact with another positive case or is at high-risk you can send in two swabs at once an utilize one requisition form by checking URI plus as well as COVID-19.

Remember in doing this you must swab resident twice.
